John Proctor was a farmer in 17th-century Massachusetts. He was married to his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Proctor had everything a Puritan man could want: a farm to work upon, three good sons to discipline, and an honest wife to make a home. Proctor was a stand up guy who spoke his mind. Around town, his name was symbolized honor and integrity. Other than his infamous affair with Abigail Williams, his name was as good as they get. Most importantly, John Proctor respected himself and his name. During the Salem Witch Trials he was accused of witchcraft, convicted. John Proctor was executed rather than confessing, in order to protect his name.
